Lesson Plan Five: Creating Objects from 2D Drawings
Setup
- Prepared Slide Presentation
- Pre-3D print glasses for the class. See links to STL's in Supplementary Materials
- Bring in a 3D pen and a variety of filaments. See link in Supplementary Materials
- Practice making a quick/rough pair of glasses using the 3D pen for Activity 2
Materials
- Computer
- Prepared Slide Presentation
- Projector
- 3D Pen
- Filament
- Cardboard
- Pipe Cleaners
- Construction Paper
- Popsicle Sticks
- Glue
- Tape
- Glitter
- Stickers
- Markers/Paint for decorating glasses
- Student notebook
- Writing materials (pencils, pencil crayons, crayons, markers etc.)
Vocabulary
- Technical Communication
- Material Construction
Sentence Stems
Write the following sentence stems on the board prior to the lesson, for student reflection at the end of class
- I used ____________________ to make my glasses. It was __________ (hard/easy) to use because: ____________________.
Introduction/Attention Getter
Timing: 5 minutes
Materials
- 3D Printed glasses
Process
- State: "Today we will be continuing our lessons on 3D Printing. We will be learning about how to create a 3D object from a 2D drawing and how different materials can effect the construction of objects. What do you think we will be making?"
- Put on glasses and state: "I need to block the sun's energy and protect my eyes? How do you think we made these customized frames?" Point to the customized topper on the glasses.
- Students should reply to the effect of "using the 3D Printer!"
- State: "Lets try making some of our own!"
Activity 1: How Materials Affect Construction
Timing: 20 Minutes
Materials
- Computer
- Slides 1-8
- Projector
- Cardboard
- Pipe Cleaners
- Construction Paper
- Popsicle Sticks
- Glue
- Tape
Process
- State: "Now we are going to draw a pair of glasses, and experiment with creating a 3D object based on our 2D drawing, using different materials.
- Ask students: "What makes something 3D, and how to we create it on the 3D printer?"
- Work thorough slides 1-8
- Break students into 4 groups. Assign each group a different material to create their glasses with. Groups will use either pipe cleaners, cardboard, construction paper or popsicle stick and tape/glue. Encourage students to be as creative as possible, while keeping in mind how their materials will behave.
- Instruct students to get a partner and measure their face with a ruler as shown on slide 5. Students will write down the measurement in their notebook.
- Instruct students to create a quick sketch of a pair of glasses in their notebooks using the measurements they just took.
- Instruct students to create glasses from their assigned material using their 2D drawing and measurements. When glasses are complete, students will discuss with their groups how the materials affected the design. For example: "My glasses were easy to create because pipe cleaners bend and shape easily." Or: "My glasses were difficult to create because popsicle sticks are hard to work into a glasses shape."
- Each group will explain why or why not their material worked well for creating their glasses design.
Activity 2: Technical Instruction
Timing: 15 Minutes
Materials
- Computer
- Slide 9
- Projector
- 3D Pen
- Filament
- Chart 1
Process
- Show students the video from slide 9 (play until 2:25)
- State: "As you can see from this video, giving instructions even on something as simple as a Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich is hard! Let's try something similar, except I want YOU to give me instructions on how to make a pair of glasses using this 3D pen. Let me show you how it works:"
- Demonstrate making a pair of glasses, narrating your actions.
- Draw Chart 1 on the board
- Take student answers on each step, and discuss the results.
- State: "As you can see, it is hard to be precise, even when creating a simple object such as glasses. However, when designing 3D objects, or working with 3D printers, being precise is a key aspect of creating a successful, and Good Design. Always keep these rules in mind."
Activity 3: Customizing 3D Printed Glasses
Timing: 15 Minutes
Materials
- 3D Printed glasses frames
- Markers/Paint
- Glitter
- Glue
- Stickers
Process
- State: "As this is our last lesson together, I have brought in a pair of customized 3D printed glasses for each of you. However, I want you to make them look great, so we can take an awesome picture together! Decorate them, and make them look spectacular."
- Instruct students to decorate their glasses
- Take a class photo when finished
Recap and Wrap Up
Timing: 5 minutes
Materials
- Student notebooks
- Writing instruments (pens, pencils etc)
Process
Instruct students to reflect on the materials they used to create their glasses in the first activity.
Instruct students to work on the sentence stem written on the board, and write the answers down in their notebooks.
