Lesson Five: Creating Objects from 2D Drawings

Essential Questions

  1. How does using different materials affect the design of a 3D Printed object?
  2. What are the essentials of technical communications?
  3. How do we build on the knowledge of the previous lessons to create a Good Design and 3D Object?

Objectives

  1. Use precise and technical language to instruct others in creating 3D Objects
  2. Identify how using different materials can effect the same design
  3. Create a 3D Object from a concept and 2D Drawing

Teacher Background Concepts

  1. This is the final lesson of this series. Students will build on the knowledge gained from the previous lessons to design a pair of glasses, create a 2D drawing of their design, and build that drawing into a 3D object using common craft materials (such as popsicle sticks, construction paper, cardboard and pipe cleaners).
  2. Students will do a version of the 'Exact Instructions Challenge for a Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich.' A version of this challenge can be seen here -with humorous results (time permitting, this video can be shown to students). By doing so, students will learn the essentials of how to create technical and precise communications -a vital skill in STEAM learning.
  3. To finalize this series of lessons, students will decorate and take home custom 3D Printed glasses frames. This will allow students to see the design process at work, as well as have a tangible 3D printed object they can keep.
