Welcome to the Build Your Vision Teaching Manual
*Please Note**
This manual will include lesson plans and supplementary material for middle school and high-school teachers delivering the Build Your Vision project for students to learn 2D Vector Design, CAD and 3D printing. Lessons will be updated at the beginning of each week for a read-through, in order to teach the project at the end of the week. Links to all supplementary material (tutorial manual, presentation slides etc.) are included on the Olimpico Learning website here:
Please be aware that as you begin teaching this course, student progress may be slow. Until students get a good handle on the tools and panels they will utilize to create graphics and 3D objects, the design process will take time. As students progress through the course, they should be able to more easily complete tutorials and projects.
*All programs utilized in this manual and the student tutorial manual have been tested on ChromeBooks to ensure their technological compatability with school resources.
This manual is a work in progress, and is in the process of being updated weekly.
Learning to work with Computer Aided Design (CAD) and utilize concepts of 3D space comprises two sets of skills. Students must learn how to create and design using 2 Dimensional graphics, and then learn to build those forms into 3D objects. By learning to create precise, geometric shapes and custom drawings using Bézier curves as a 2 Dimensional graphics, students can then learn to build these shapes into 3D objects. Furthermore, many of the tools and methods used must be first learned in 2 Dimensions, before application to 3 Dimensional space.
As such, learning the tools and methods to create vector graphics is the essential first step in learning to properly design intricate 3 Dimensional objects in 3D CAD programs. The Build Your Vision Project involves learning 2 Dimensional vector (drawing) programs and 3 Dimensional CAD programs. Students will use an online drawing vector-based program to create designs, and learn to import these designs into a CAD program in order to build and print out 3D objects in a variety of projects as they progress through the curriculum.
The culminating project of this course will be for students to create a prototype for a pair of prescription glasses that students will design and create. Students will learn the principles of design, trouble-shooting and problem-solving, 3D space and 3D printing essentials in order to output a successful project.
To access the student tutorial manual students will use to complete the project: see here.
